Sir Reginald Hargreeves has always been a rather cold fellow, treating his "children" with a brutal indifference that ofttimes lapses into abuse. Umbrella Academy'southward first season rightly centred him equally the source of his family unit's trauma, but Reginald'southward lack of humanity makes a lot more sense now following that big reveal in season ii.
Is Reginald Hargreeves an alien?
After Diego failed to terminate the assassination of John F Kennedy in 1963, Reginald met up with the shady onetime white men who plotted the President'southward death. While they congratulated themselves, Hargreeves admonished them all, saying that JFK was supposed to be left alive: "That was the bargain!"
The lath had lied to Reginald, simply they then dismissed his outrage, explaining that "Your interests on the dark side of the moon won't be afflicted." Either way, it seems unlikely that Reginald hails from the moon, and he certainly wasn't born on World. Looking back, fans of Umbrella Academy might now think how clues regarding his true identity were planted back in flavour one.
Think that baroque flashback in the finale where a much-younger Reginald appears beside a woman lying in bed? Behind them, glimpses of another earth can be seen through the windows. As they talk, information technology's revealed that Reginald must leave his lover behind for practiced.
"I will die here, but you won't," she says. "I won't allow it. The world needs you, Reggie."
The show doesn't explicate this scene before or afterwards, and there'due south no acknowledgement of information technology in season two either, at to the lowest degree, directly...
How did Vanya give Harlan her powers?

In this scene, Reginald'southward free energy was released out of a jar and into the sky. While all this happened, rockets also launched from the surface of this world, earlier Reginald himself departed for globe.
Whether Hargreeves created this energy or only followed it to our world, it's clear that this is what gave the children their powers back on October 1, 1989. That would also explain how Reginald instantly knew these miraculous babies from across the world would grow up to develop superpowers that he could then manipulate for himself.
Showrunner Steve Blackman exclusively confirmed to Digital Spy that this is all linked, explaining that:
"The notion is, each of them, because they were spontaneous creations from their mothers, there's something going on inside of them that makes them special. And whatever that thing is – by accident, Vanya gave a piffling fleck of that to Harlan."
